What if your next therapy session didn’t take place in an office—but outdoors, under the open sky, with the steady rhythm of your footsteps grounding you as you talk?
Walk and Talk Therapy is a unique and refreshing approach to counseling that combines the healing power of movement, nature, and conversation. At LifeSpring, we’re excited to offer this alternative for clients who want to experience therapy in a way that feels less traditional—and often more natural.
What Is Walk and Talk Therapy?
Walk and Talk Therapy is exactly what it sounds like: a counseling session that takes place while walking, typically outdoors in a safe, scenic location. You and your therapist walk side-by-side, engaging in meaningful conversation while moving at a comfortable pace.
It’s not just about taking therapy outside—it’s about inviting the mind and body to work together in the healing process.
Why Walk?
Movement can be a powerful ally in emotional processing. Walking naturally reduces stress, boosts endorphins, and enhances clarity of thought. When we walk, especially in nature, we often find it easier to:
Open up emotionally
Shift perspective
Release anxiety or tension
Tap into creativity and insight
The bilateral stimulation of walking (left-right-left) mirrors aspects of EMDR and other trauma-informed techniques, helping clients process experiences with more fluidity.
And for some, the informal setting and forward motion make difficult conversations feel a little easier.
Benefits of Walk and Talk Therapy
Walk and Talk Therapy offers a wide range of benefits, both physical and emotional:
Reduced anxiety and depressive symptoms
Improved mood and energy
Increased emotional openness
Greater mind-body connection
Enhanced self-awareness and creativity
More relaxed and natural therapeutic dynamic
It can be especially helpful for clients who feel “stuck” in talk therapy, struggle with sitting still, or simply feel more comfortable in outdoor spaces.
Who Is It For?
Walk and Talk Therapy is a good fit for:
Adults and teens experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, or burnout
Clients looking for a more dynamic, embodied therapeutic approach
Individuals who process thoughts more easily while moving
Those who feel energized and grounded by nature
It’s also ideal for people who want to integrate physical wellness into emotional healing.
Walk and Talk Therapy may not be suitable for everyone—clients with mobility limitations, certain mental health needs, or preferences for privacy may do better with traditional in-office or telehealth sessions. At LifeSpring, we’ll help you determine the best fit for your goals and comfort level.
What to Expect
Your therapist will work with you to choose a safe, scenic location (often a quiet park or trail). Sessions are paced to your preference—this is not a workout, it’s a gentle walk guided by your emotional process.
You don’t need fancy gear—just comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. We’ll have a plan in place for rescheduling due to weather or shifting to in-office if needed.
Confidentiality is still a top priority. We take care to choose quiet routes and avoid crowded areas. If someone passes by during your session, you’re always in control of the conversation—you can pause, shift topics, or wait for privacy to return.
A Natural Path Toward Healing
There’s something deeply restorative about walking side-by-side in the open air, letting nature hold space for your healing journey. Whether you’re navigating a season of change, seeking clarity, or simply want to try something new—Walk and Talk Therapy invites you to move forward, literally and emotionally.
At LifeSpring, we’re here to walk with you.
